Chapter Two

Diary Entry, Year: 2076, Day 32:

It has been 15 days since the last earthquake. It had destroyed half of the house, ripping out our bathtub and having pipes spew water everywhere. Jasper broke his leg walking over an unsteady board. Poor pup. Only two years old. I don't know how long my family can go on. Steven's family was killed last earthquake, only his sister and him are left. Our neighborhood's been destroyed, all the trees uprooted and cars flipped over. I don't know how long we can go on like this. The Big One will surely have our beloved state of Californa sink.

Taylor shivered and closed the diary, her hand shaking. A dry spot of blood stung on her leg. A door had fallen on her when the earthquake hit 15 days ago. Everyone in California is devastated and frightened. More and more people are moving out and Steven's grandparents had flown him out of the state, all the way to Michigan where Taylor would never see him again. Taylor's parents couldn't afford to move, they would have no place to go.

Chapter One

"All pencils down students and pass your papers up!"
Taylor dropped her pencil and passed her paper up to Marissa, the girl sitting infront of her. It was a beautiful day, the 25th of May. She was at her school, South Fork Middle School in Southern California.  Her teacher, Mr. Evans, collected the papers from Marissa and smiled.
"Good news everyone, this is our last test of the year!" He shouted as he flung the papers into the air. Taylor clapped and smiled, her blue eyes twinkling.
Mr. Evans is the greatest English teacher ever! She thought, leaning over to Matthew, the boy sitting next to her.
"Now theres no more tests for you to fail, Matt!" She whispered teasingly to him. He clasped his hands together and looked up at the ceiling with a goofy face.
"Thank god!" He said, laughing. Taylor laughed back and felt a tap on her shoulder.
She turned around to see her best friend, Steven, grinning widely with a twinkle in his dark green eyes.
"Hey Tay! Can you believe the school year's almost over? Mr Evan's is the best teacher in California!"
Taylor brushed her blonde hair behind her ear.
"Yeah, but there's always next year. It's only three months. You'll be fine." She punched him lightly and playfully.
Steven gave her a half smile.
"Yeah, I guess-"
Suddenly, the floor started to shake violently.
"Hit the deck!" She heard someone scream. The floor shook violently and she was thrown to floor with Steven landing right beside her.
"Earthquake!" He screamed as the TV in the front of the class tipped over and landed on the computer.
Steven was hiding under a desk with his hand covering his head but the violent shakes of the ground kept on tossing him back and forth.
"Everyone! Under your desks!" Taylor heard Mr. Evans shout. Taylor searched for for a desk and found one standing up right. The floor shook again and a sharp splitting sound rang in her ears as the wall cracked open. Taylor managed to climb under the desk, her hands clutching her head. She heard Mr. Evans's desk flip onto it's side and papers were everywhere. Taylor let out a cry as a computer started to lean in her direction, making a small creaking sound. She pushed the desk she was under away just in time as the computer came crashing. It's screen cracked and the wires sparked. Mr. Evans came stumbling over to Taylor, his glasses broken and his bright red tie ripped.
"Taylor! Are you okay?" He asked, before the ground gave one last final shake. Everyone screamed as the door fell off it's hinges, crashing down to the floor with a huge bang.
After that everything went quickly. A security guard rushed into the room and picked Taylor up roughly.
Two men with white uniforms wheeled a stretcher through the space where the door had been and picked up a motionless boy with a large gash on his head.
Taylor knew exactly what was going on. It was the first earthquake leading on to the most terrifying thing that could ever happen to California.
This was just the start of The Big One.
